We've been holding on to this wine for years, just waiting for the moment. 2014 was the year of the Carlton Complex Fire that burned through the Methow Valley and right up to this vineyard block, Rocky Mother at Alta Lake. Typically Rocky Mother is our "reserve" release each year highlighting the power of a vineyard block that grows right on the edge of sustainability. In 2014 it showed those colors in a much different way as fires burned and lingered during the growing season for this fruit. This wine was bottled in the spring of 2016 and we chose to remain hopeful instead of chock it up as a loss. The wait has been worth it. While this is not the wine you typically enjoy from Rocky Mother, it is a Syrah with interest and enjoyability. We won't lie, there is a smokiness there and that is reflected in the pricing of this wine. But it is also fun, ready to drink, and a screaming bargain at nearly half the price*.
* We know this because we have already seen many repeat purchases this spring in the tasting room.
